What would you do if you had a son or daughter, who didn’t have a drivers license, took your car (without permission) out for a joyride and smashed into two cars... but then at least waited for the cops to arrive?
What punishment would you dole out and for how long?

Well they are getting a part time job, or two. That is for sure.

Ask the court to try them as an adult.
I actually don’t have any kids so I have no idea how to be a parent.

It doesn't matter what I'd do, because the real answer is that I'd not have children in the first place. They can't go for a joyride if they don't exist.

i’d pay for the damages.... and then probably send her off to be institutionalized coz fuck my life girl... you clearly aint right in the head
but seriously... i dont know... owning up to it is a good thing...but taking the car in the first place... shit im not sure anything makes up for that..
i guess i’d do what i can for her... but it would be bloody hard for me to make excuses for her

Depends on how I found out. Cops call me? Or did I get a phone call starting with "dad, I fucked up". If it's the latter, let them decide. What do you think should happen, go from there

I’d have a very hard working indentured servant around the house, in the few free moments of time they had between school and working their ass off at the best part-time job they can find to repay me. If they had any assets like a guitar or other musical instruments, stuff related to hobbies or things like a gaming computer or console(s), they’d be learning the art of selling them. Needless to say, that license they lacked would remain an enigma until they reached 18, and that would probably be a sin that would result in them never, ever getting the benefit of paying their way via a reduced insurance rate on the family policies.
They would also be having no fun allowed living on double secret probation for their foreseeable future. All this is to say that my theoretical future off spring would get to see dad go into Marine mode...
The severity of all this would hinge on the taking without permission without a license . That makes it an intentional violation of basic trust, not just a we were all dumb teenagers once type of fuck up. Take away the permission and permission of the state problems, and I’d probably treat it as a not unreasonable term of indentured servitude and no fun allowed, and paying back the insurance deductible and the future rate increases going forward.

yeah - big difference between one random bad decision and a pattern of questionable behavior.... Could be a positive turning point, or the latest evidence you have an ongoing problem on your hands that you need to mitigate...

There’s no hope for them, the only solution is to c ut all losses and start over .
The plan would be to throw them out of the house, divorce their mom, buy a Corvette , and start hitting on girls 20 years younger than me.

Okay, so most folks do have uninsured motorist on their insurance, I do. After insurance takes car of the rogue, carolla and my nissan, my kid will not be able to get a drivers license while under my supervision. Once they are 18 and out of they house they can get a license and pay for their own damn insurance. It’s difficult to discipline a child of this age, nothing really does any good other than to build resentments . I would start with a swift kick to the nuts tho.

For tak ing things that dont belong to them, and risking peoples lives, i’ d clear their entire room of everything, put it in a storage unit and tell them i threw it out. Or mabey just actually throw it out.

“and start hitting on girls 20 years younger than me.”
What if I’m only 35 years old????
You know... 15 can get you 20!!!

I’ll preface this by saying kids that do shit like this generally have absentee parents.
However, if my kids turn out to be shitheads, I would hope they’re at least smart enough to not steal a car that can be easily traced back to them, and if they do, not stick around so as to open me up to a civil suit from the person they hit.

Yeah, it all depends on the delivery of the news. At least they didn’t skip out once they hit the other cars. I did some stupid stuff as a kid that age. And they would be working it off as well. That goes without saying, but at the end of the day, it’s still just stuff damaged and no people were hurt.
Unless the kid is a douche about it and acts like a little snot.... well then that’s a whole other thing at that point.
I always joke that my life was a game of seconds and inches... a second more or less here and an inch more or less there, and I’m not here.... or worse, somebody else isn’t here. So yeah, it’s a bit case by case. And depends on how the kid reacts.

Kid staying for the cops does speak highly of them, I'll give them that.
